Lifestyle changes have been shown to decrease the potential for breast cancer – even for those at high risk. The following seven steps can help lower your risk for breast cancer:

01 | Limit Alcohol

Moderation is key; consuming more than one alcoholic beverage each day increases the probability for developing breast cancer.

02 | Don’t Smoke

Smoking increases the risk of many types of cancer, including breast cancer. If you are a smoker, work with your medical provider to find the best treatment plan to help you quit.

03 | Control Your Weight

Obesity has been linked to breast cancer. The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is about a lifestyle, not fad diets. Choose nutritious options and be attentive to calorie, sugar and fat intake.

04 | Be Active

Research suggests that increased physical activity, such as a daily 30-minute walk, reduces overall breast cancer risk by approximately 10-30%.

05 | Get Regular Screenings

Regular screening can help detect breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Talk to your doctor about which tests are right for you and when you should have them.

06 | Breastfeed

If you have children, breastfeeding for at least a year can reduce the mother's risk of developing breast cancer later in life.

07 | Limit or Avoid HRT

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can raise the likelihood of breast cancer. If HRT is necessary, avoid those that contain progesterone and limit their use to less than three years. Alternatively, ask your medical provider about non-hormonal treatment options.
